Pakistan-born Australian opener Usman Khawaja has been selected as the Test cricketer of the year 2023 by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Last year, he was given the best award in the men's category by the governing body of world cricket for his excellent performance in the red ball game.
Khawaja has to compete with his teammate Travis Head to win the ICC award. Apart from that, India's right-arm spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and England's batsman Joe Root were in the running for the best of the year award. Khawaja beat all three of them and took home the award of the year.
Australia won the Test Championship title for the first time last year. Khawaja performed brilliantly in that event. That is why the right-handed Aussie opener has been selected as the Test Cricketer of the Year by the ICC.
Khawaja was excellent with the bat throughout 2023. The Aussie opener played his career-best unbeaten innings of 195 against South Africa the following year after the 2022 run. He played 13 matches in the whole year and scored 1210 runs at an average of 93.
The Test series against India that year was the best series of Khawaja's career. He scored 333 runs in 4 matches in that series. Khawaja also became the highest run scorer in the series with one century and two fifties.
